Chapter 9

When they pulled up at her brother’s, Richie laid his hand on Kara’s arm, stopping her from getting out of the car right away. “Can I call you?”

Kara looked out at the house and then back at Richie, “sure, but I thought you were spending this time with Ava.”

He slid his hand up her arm to cup her cheek, “I am, but that doesn’t mean I can’t make time for you too princess.”

Kara put her hand over Richie’s, turned her head and kissed his palm, “thank you for everything today. You made what could have been a very long boring travel day,” she hesitated, looking for the right words, “quite interesting.”

With his hand still on her cheek, he pulled her close, “its about to get even more interesting.” He traced her mouth with his tongue and kissed her lightly. Her hand dropped from his as he deepened the kiss, letting it slid up his thigh.

Reigning in his desire for her, Richie eased back from the kiss. He had felt her hand on his thigh and he wanted nothing more than to move it higher, to let her feel what she did to him, but it wasn’t the right time.

In a post-kiss daze Kara reached for the door handle and pushed the door open. “Thank you again Richie. I really do appreciate all the trouble you went to for me today.”

He took her hand and kissed the back of it, “it was my pleasure princess. I’ll call you.” She nodded and got out of the car. He watched as she walked up to the door and found the key. After she had the door opened she turned and waved as he drove off.

With a sigh Kara set her suitcase down in the guest room and flung herself across the bed. Rolling onto her back she closed her eyes and Richie’s face swam in front of her. Even just thinking about him had her all out of sorts. It was never like this with Greg. That thought sobered her. Maybe I should give Richie a chance. She sat up, suddenly hoping that Richie would call sooner rather than later.

A few blocks away Richie was having similar thoughts. He was sitting on his couch staring out the window into his backyard, phone in hand, wondering if he should call her now or wait. She had really gotten under his skin in a very short period of time. He couldn’t remember ever feeling like this before, not even when he had met Heather.

Kara was so different from the women he had been with. The best part though he thought, was that she wasn’t a fan. She truly was interested in him for him and that was the important part. He looked at his phone again and decided to wait until the next day to call her. He didn’t want to rush her into anything. He called his other favorite girl instead.

“Hello.” The voice was decidedly not elated to hear from him. Richie was surprised to get Heather on the other end of the phone. Usually when she saw it was him calling she let Ava answer the phone.

“Hi Heather, I called to talk to Ava, where is she?”

Heather huffed out a breath, “she’s in bed.”

Richie glanced at the clock; it was only 8, still early for her to be in bed. “Why is she in bed so early?”

Heather sighed, “you’re not going to be able to have her this weekend Richie. She’s sick.”

The disappointment hit Richie hard, “how sick is she and when did she get sick?” He figured this was just a way for Heather to piss him off and he wanted to make sure she was telling him the truth.

“She woke up not feeling well this morning and she’s been running a fever all day, chills, sick to her stomach, the works. The doctor says she has the flu and needs to stay in bed.” She was telling the truth, Richie knew she wouldn’t like about something like this now that he heard all the details.

“Okay, when she wakes up tomorrow tell her I will be over to see her.” They said their good byes and Richie dropped the phone on the table. Damn. He stood and paced the room, it was too quiet, had been ever since he had moved back here alone. He stopped pacing and stared out the window, he needed to get out of here. He grabbed his phone off the table and fished his keys out of his pocket and headed to the car.

Ten minutes later he parked his hummer at his favorite local hangout. Glancing around he noticed a few more cars than he would have liked, but he kept his head down and headed to the bar. He ordered a club soda with lime, found a booth in the back and sat down. Someone was singing and he looked toward the stage. Oh great, it was karaoke night at the bar. He shook his head and smiled, hopefully this won’t be too painful. He took another sip of his drink and looked around the bar.

Jack, Lucy and Kara sat at a table on the other side of the bar. Lucy had cajoled both Jack and Kara into singing at least one song each and their selections had been handed back to the operator. They sipped on their drinks and got caught up. Lucy was telling Kara about the emergency when her name was called.

Richie was just coming back from the men’s room and hadn’t heard her name, but he glanced up in time to see her back as she moved to the front of the bar. Is that…? When she turned around and he saw it was her, he settled back, smiled and waited. He knew this was going to be good.

Kara scanned the faces in the bar, noticing someone trying to hide in the shadows near the back. She looked away and then back again, oh shit, he’s here. Why did I pick this song? The music to the Celine Dion song she had chosen started and she started to sing

Don't know much about your life.
Don't know much about your world, but
Don't want to be alone tonight,
On this planet they call earth.

You don't know much about my past, and
I don't have a future figured out.
And maybe this is going too fast.
And maybe it's not meant to last,

But what do you say to taking chances,
What do you say to jumping off the edge?
Never knowing if there's solid ground below
Or hand to hold, or hell to pay,
What do you say,
What do you say?

Richie sat up a little straighter as he listened to the words she was singing. He watched her intently, wondering if she had chosen this song for a particular reason.

I just want to start again,
And maybe you could show me how to try,
And maybe you could take me in,
Somewhere underneath your skin?

What do you say to taking chances,
What do you say to jumping off the edge?
Never knowing if there's solid ground below
Or hand to hold, or hell to pay,
What do you say,
What do you say?

And I had my heart beating down,
But I always come back for more, yeah.
There's nothing like love to pull you up,
When you're laying down on the floor there.
So talk to me, talk to me,
Like lovers do.
Yeah walk with me, walk with me,
Like lovers do,
Like lovers do.

Kara scanned the room as she sang. Locking eyes on Richie she continued, wondering if he would understand what she was trying to say.

What do you say to taking chances,
What do you say to jumping off the edge?
Never knowing if there's solid ground below
Or hand to hold, or hell to pay,
What do you say,
What do you say?

Don't know much about your life
And I don't know much about your world

When she finished he applauded right along with the rest of the bar patrons, she clearly had been the best they had heard in there in quite a while. He watched, wondering if she would go back to her table or come to his. She hesitated momentarily before heading toward him.
